Dissolve projection

It is not that long ago, though some call it historic, that presentations were done this way.

One to a dozen slide projectors. Pointing to a projection screen. 35mm slides, consisting of film, even that seems to be forgotten, stuck in slide trays. Up to 80 at a time.

The projectors controlled by a remote control or a complex technology, called dissolve unit.

The audio recorded to tape. (What is that again?) Digital signals also recorded to that tape.

The dissolve unit reads the digital signal and turns the lights on in the projectors. Dimming the lights in one projector and increasing it in another, called dissolve.

Sounds primitive to our tik tok generation?

Maybe. But the results were often stunning. High quality images, creative shows, real craftsmanship.

In fact it took modern, digital projectors a very long time to give us the same image quality as 35mm slides could give us.

But of course, what we may have as occasional computer meltdown or mediaplayer failure, was far more common with jammed slides. Not to talk about dust on the slides or newton rings, which added a type of perverse animation. Sometimes welcome if the slides were accompanied by a boring presenter.

Powerpoint can not give you that.

Slide shows. The clack of slide changes at the back of the room. Times have changed. To the better, maybe. Sometimes. But there was a real magic to these old fashioned shows.

The grandparent of dissolve shows…. Kodak Carousel. Made in Germany.
